Gold Worth £31,000 Allegedly Stolen By Metalluragist

Wellington, Aug. 25.

The theft of gold valued at £31,496 was alleged in the Magistrate's Court to-day against Leo Edward Morland, aged 41 years, metallurgist, and he was remanded for a week. The charge was that Morland on or about October 29, 1940, at Arahura, near Hokitika, being a servant in the employ of the Arahura Gold Dredging Ltd., he stole 3650 ounces of alluviai gold valued at £31,496, the property of the company. The police asked for a remand, which was granted by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M. Morland was not represented by counsel and had nothing to say.
