Germans Declare Allied Invasion Is Quite Impossible
Rec. 11.15 p.m. London, Aug. 24. The 'Times Istanbul correspondent says Turkiuh journalists who have returned from Germany, where they were guests of the German Government, report that food is scarce, but nobody is really starving. The hospitals are full of wounded, and hardly any family is not in mourning for a member killed or ma/imed. Shop windows display rich assortments, few, if any, of which can be pvlrchased. 'Dr. Goebbels, addressing the visitors, d'eclared that Germany never intended to conquer the entire Soviet Union, but aimed to render the Soviet harmless, •which could be achieved before the winter. It was then up to the British to decide what to do next. An Alli-d invasion was absolutely out of the question. The German staff found it dangerous and impracticable to invade England in 1940 when she was practically disarmed, and it would be much more difficult for the Allies if they attempted the reverse process when Germany was fully prepared to receive them.
