Christchurch Falls Into Line With Liquor Prices

Press Assn. Christchurch, Aug. 25. For the purpose of bringing Christchurch prices into line with other cities, the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers' Association has issued a new beer and stout price list for hotels in Christchurch and suburbs. The price of glasses and handles sold over the bar remains at 7d, but increases are made in the prices of bottles of beer and stout. The main items on the new price list, which comes into operation to-day, are: Local ale and stout from 2s to 2s ld per bottle; other South Island ale and stout from 2s 3d; New Zealand lager from 2s; New Zealand lager (pints) from ls 5d; draught ale, from 7s 3d a gallon, from 3s 9d a half-gallon; "blue peters," from 5/6. Mr. K. N. McGillivray, secretary of the association, said that when the Price Tribunai considered the effect of the increased taxation on the price of beer and stout and authorised general increases, authority was given for Christchurch hotels to raise their charges to the level of other centres. As the full effect of the increases had not then been felt by the licensed trade in Christchurch it had not taken advantage of that authority until now.
