Paddling Pool For Children Given By Stratford Citizen
A paddling .pool for Stratford children has been provided through a gift of £45 by Mr. E. D. Evans, a prominent business man and a member of the Stratford Borough Council. A gift of £5 for seats was given by Mr. S. E. Mann, Mahoe. Only a month ago Mr. Evans gave £21 to provide a sand pit at the chilrlren's playing area. "I appreciate citizens' making gifts to the town during their lifetime," said the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, commenting on the gift for the pool, which is being constructed at the swimming baths. The pool is built of concrete, and is circular in shape with a short coping projecting. It is at the rear of the swimming baths, with many trees in the vicinity, and a lawn around the area is being constructed. On the terrace above the pool several seats have been built, and the section, although open to the sun, is well sheltered from the wind. At the last borough council meeting Mr. Thomson related the circumstances that led to the gift. On a recent visit to the area Mr. Mann offered £5 towards the cost of erecting the pool, estimated at £45. When Mr. Evans, however, heard of the proposal he offered to give the whole amount, and Mr. Mann agreed to give his £5 for providing seats. Cr. H. S. Sinclair suggested at the meeting that the council should erect a plaque to commemorate not only the generosity of Messrs. Evans and Mann but also the Mayor, who had spent a considerable sum on the formation of the present site. "Probably many persons at Stratford do not know of the Mayor's generosity in that respect," said Cr. C. R. Finnerty, who seconded the proposal to erect a plaque, the motion being carried.
