Competitors Show Good Standard At Festival Opening

A good standard was shown by competitors at the opening at Hawera yesterday of the three-day festival of music, elocution and dancing arranged by the Hawera Competitions Societv. Large audiences attended in the day and last night, when recalls of most of the day's items were heard. At the conclusion of last night's session the judges of the individual sections were introduced by the chairman of the competitions committee, Mr. F. W. Horner, who also welcomed the entrants. Miss Lorraine Major, judge for the dancing classes, said a -fairly high standard was shown by entrants in the Highland fling class for children under eight years. The importance of correct facial expression, especially in character dances, was stressed by Miss Major, who said several of the entries were lacking in this respect. The standard displayed in instrumental and vocal items was good, said the judge, Mr. S. Oliver, although there was nothing outstanding in any of the performances. The danger of young people forcing their voices also must be guarded against. Competitors were present from Palmerston North, Wanganui, Stratford, Inglewood, Waitara, New Plymouth, Opunake and most Sonth Taranaki towns. The organiser is Mr. E. A. Norris, assisted by members of the competitions committee. The judge of the elocution is Mrs. E. Culford Bell, and the accompanist is Mrs. P. O. Veaie.
