Canterbury Beats Otago By One Point at Rugby
Press Assn.
Christchurch, Last Night.
Canterbury beat Otago by 16 points to 15 in a game at times full of interest and fast open play by both sides. For Canterbury Argus, Pearson and Kerr scored tries, Morgan converting two and kicking a penalty go'al. For Otago Paewai ] scored a try and Trevathan converted and kicked two penalty goals and potted a goal. , , In the first spell Otago had the better of play, the forwards securing the ball frequently in the scrums and the backs being well served by Paewai. Slowness by the five-eighths did not give the speedy three-quarters a chance and Canterbury backs tackled solidly. Otago forwards, led by George, also showed a better knowledge of the finer points of the game. At half-time Otago led by 12 points to 10. Canterbury showed renewed vigour in the second spell when Otago seemed to tire and was hard-pressed many times. The best back on the field was Paewai, the elusive Maori half-back, who opened up play consistently and was solid when his team was sorely pressed.
