Indian Commissioner To Sponsor Trade With N.Z.
Press Assn.
Auckland, Last Night.
Charged with exploring the possibilities of increasing trade between New Zealand and India, Ramji Ram Saksena, Indian Government trade commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, is paying his first visit to the Dominion. There were products normal to each country, of which the other was in considerable need, said Mr. Saksena, but there were difficulties that were due not to the reluctance of buyers on each side, but to the necessity of war needs being served first. He wished to make contact with the Government and the business community of the Dominion to find out what could best be done in the circumstances. In post-war years India could, for instance, take very large quantities of wool and could easily supply New Zealand's entire requirements of cotton textiles India's output of cottons had been doubled since the outbreak of war but, even so, it was insufficient to cope with the added tasks of clothing the armies of Russia and China. Ways were still being found, said Mr. Saksena, of sending materials of war to China. Though . the routes available were not able to carry individual articles of any great size or weight,' there was hope of improving the communications in the near future.
