Home Guard Appeals. The Armed Forces Appeal Board at a hearing on Friday adjourned sine die the following appeals against Home Guard service: W. H. Quickfall, accountant and company secretary; T. Carrington, employed by the New Plymouth Breweries; and T. H. Fryer, horse trainer. Clothing Coupons. A further reduction in the number oi coupons, under the clothing rationing system, for men's working trousers, working boots and socks is being sought by the Auckland Farmers' Union. It was reported that because gumboots were not procurable more trousers and boots had to be purchased. Consumption of Potatoes. For the last six years the average annual consumption of potatoes in New Zealand has been one hundredweight a head, or two pounds two and a half ounces, a week. Taking those of tender years as non-users, the average would be nearer two and a-half pounds, and the army ra tion of one pound a day, which ruled this week, was greatly in excess of civilian consumption. Okarito's Claim to Fame. The Westland County Council at its monthly meeting approved the following motion moved by Cr. Donovan: "That it be suggested to the New Zealand Government that in any public commemoration, in December next, of the 300th anniversary of the discovery of New Zealand by Abel Tasman, the claims of the Okarito district (where land was first sighted on December 13, 1642, and where a memorial marks the event) to participate on the occasion be not ov6rlooked." Juvenile Delinquency. The view that lack of parental control was the chief contributary factor to the juvenile delinquency being complained of throughout the Dominion was expressed to the Canterbury School Committees' Association by the senior inspector of the Canterbury Education Board, Mr. S. Irwin. Motion pictures were in themselves not harmful, he said, but the effect of children being allowed to attend too frequently had serious consequences. Answering a question, Mr. Irwin said he noticed no particular benefit where Bible training was given, but he considered that this training would not show visible results until Later years. The main difficulty was that many young parents were both working, and the children had no home life.
