Germans massed on banks of Don and Krasnodar evacuated by Russians.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright
London, Aug. 20. LATEST reports from Russia show no improvement in the grave situation in the Don elbow or in the Caucasus. The tremendous and vital battle for Stalingrad continues, with the Germans trying not only to establish themselves on the Don banks but to cross the river. In the Caucasus, following the Russian withdrawal from Krasnodar, tense defensive battles are being fought south of the city, where the enemy has again pressed the Russian forces ' back. The renewed intensity of the German attempts to blast the Russians from their defensive positions blocking the way to Stalingrad, also the speed with which General von Bock is pushing his Caucasian pincers towards the Caspian, are causing the greatest concern over the Russian situation since the first German smash towards the Volga was held up.
