No Slackening Of Taranaki Effort To Raise £100,000
"Every part of province must work hard." Taranaki is still to endeavour to raise £100,000 towards the Dominion sick and wounded appeal although its original allocation was £55,800 and only 45 per cent. of the £100,000 has been raised, according to a decision at a meeting of the Taranaki Patriotic Provincial Council at Stratford yesterday. "Every part of the province must work hard to get its quota," declared Mr. P. Thomson. Stratford. He agreed with a remark that the budget would be lighter next year. Demands on the funds were increasing all the time, and everyone should give to the utmost of his power and not measure it by what other persons had given. "I agree that we should go on and get our £100.00." said the chairman, Mr. E. | R. C. Gilmour, New Plymouth. "New j Plymouth is a long way behind but we are not slackening our efforts."
'The trouble is that many people think the Government should pay," said Mr. L. H. Clapham, Hawera. The money was for comforts and not for equipment. he added, and no one should refuse to give, saying it was the Government s task. Comments were made that, with little more than a month to go before the appeal closed, persons would stop giving, but the Hawera delegates raised the question of what would happen to surpluses over the quotas if the appeal were stopped at the original allocation. Collectors went round on the basis of raising 100,000, and they must keep up their efforts, contended Mr. J. Gibbs. Inglewood. Some persons had not given anything yet, and others were paying well.
