MANGANUI GORGE

SURVEY OF NEW TRACIC Central Taranaki mountaineers under the leadership of Mr. H. N. Murray, Eltham, made further progress on the surveying of a route for a new track through the Manganui gorge, East Egmont, at the week-end. The result of the survey was stated last night to be very encouraging so far. It is hoped that initial trail-blazing and marking will be completed next weekend. Owing, it is thought, to the week-end being at the end of the month with a consequent extra restriction on the use of petrol there was not a large crowd at East Egmont yesterday. About six cars were checked at the Stratford house. Some Eltham Alpine Club members tramped around to North Egmont and skiers enjoyed good sport on the higher slopes. During the week three Australian visitors stayed at the Stratford bunkhouse. They said they were very pleased with the sport and facilities offered on the eastern side. Two Waitara skiers spent part of the week on the mountain. They reported sport was good in the vicinity of the Policeman. Overcast weather at North Egmont turned to heavy rain at about 3 p.m. yesterday. Nevertheless there were 16 car loads of visitors in addition to mountaineers from all sides of the mountain, who attended the annual ski championships of the Taranaki Alpine Club.
