CHEESE STAFFS' PROTEST
Palmerston N., Sept 28. The annual meeting of the Wellington branch' of the New Zealand Dairy Factory and Related Trades Union of Workers passed a resolution protesting at the extension of the 52-hour period in cheese factories from 22 weeks to a maximum of 43 weeks, contending that this did not help in any way in the production of the extra 15,000 tons of cheese required. "The recent order/' states the resolution, "will do nothing except to compel workers in those factories that work under the order to work all hours in excess of 44 for 1/3 per hour and all hours in excess of 38 hours for 9d an hour. "The overwhelming weight of evidence given before the Industrial Emergency Committee was • in favour of the workers but the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) with the agreement of the so-called representatives of Labour appointed to "that committee, has seen fit to deal the dairy workers a blow we are not likely to forget."
