FEDERAL ELECTION WIN
Rec. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 23. A most surprising development in the week-end checking of absent and postal votes and the distribution of preferences in 12 doubtful contests in the recent Federal elections was the last minute victory of the Labour leader, Mr. J. Curtin, at Fremantle by 522 votes, due mainly to the good support he received from soldiers. Mr. Curtin has ascertained that Communists in western Australia hurled a block vote of 6000 against him, caU3ing his early setback. There ai-e still a number of seats definitely in doubt, of which Labour needs five in order to deprive the Government of a working majority. It appears to have an excellent chance of winning four of the five. On the other hand the Government's cam'paign directors express the opinion that Government parties will ftnqlly -win out with a majority, of two or three.
