JAPANESE IN INDO-CHINA OCCUPATION OF HAIPHONG
Rec., 6.30 p.m. Hanoi, Sept. 27. Japanese troops have occupied the Dosom shore batteries which protect Haiphong. thus securing Japan's first naval base in Indo-China. The French said it was a minor incident that was unlikely to have repercussions. The Japanese have established their headquarters at the premises of the Sino-American South-western Transportation Company, which previously imported American trucks to China. It is entimated that 1000 new trucks that were awaiting delivery have been confLscated. It. is officially staled that the French have asked Tokio to send a plenipotentiary to Indo-China to halt the Canton army's continued southward advance, which the French arrny is not opposing. The French said that General Nishihara, head of the Japanese mission, had failed in his efforts to halt the army and was now en route to Tokio aboard a transport. * 1
