Should Pullets Be Introduced Instead of Hens?
This year, more than in others, it is desirable that all birds kept on the farm should give the best possible production in retum for food fed, and in this connection the question arises as to whether the laying flock should consist mainly of hens retained for a second year or whether it should be largely composed of pullets. While everyone knows that pullets will lay more eggs in their first year than hens in their second year, it has to be taken into account that all pullet replacements have first to he reared and fed for six or seven months before they begin to produce. If one could be certain that present conditions would not last more than a year, owners would be well advised to retain all worth-while yearlings and only make up flock numbers with pullets.
