Chief Magistrates.

The first Mayor of Waitara was the late Arthur W. Ogle, who took office on October 3, 1904. Subsequent holders of the office were the late William F. Newbery, 1905;. the late Thomas S. Drynan, 1906; the late Walter F. Jenkins, _ 19071915; the late Ernest T. Beckbessinger, 1915-1917; the late Richard Morgan, 19171927; Ernest A. George, 1927-1931 and 1936-1938; the late James Hine, 1931-1936. The present Mayor is Mr. J. P. Hughson, who took office in 1938. Mr. Arms has been town clerk since 1925. Mr. W. R. Johns is chairman of the Harbour Board and president of the Chamber of Commerce. Schpols Hclp War Effort. As a special war effort, several schools in Taranaki are growing root crops for seed. Among crops already planted include selected roots of carrots, mangels and sugar-beet. The plan is being tried out this year more or less as an experiment.
