Poor Housing is Often Responsible for Loss in Pigs
No animal can be an efficient productive unit unless it is provided, firstly with living conditions enabling it to do its job, and, secondly, with adequate feed. Not until a pig is provided with such essentials can maximum returns be expected, more' especially as efficient handling is primarily assoeiated with the question of housing equipment. In successful pig-farming every management factor is dependent upon this need. Those who are responsible for advising farmers throughout Taranaki on their many pig problems find that shortcomings in feeding and management methods ar'e, in the main, directly traceable to inefficient equipment. It is well'khown that preventable diseases resulting from unsatisfactory housing conditions and infected soils or pastures available to pigs are the cause of much economic wastage within the industry. Nutritional disorders, assoeiated, not only with bad feeding but also with poor accommodation, are similarly responsible for heavy loss through death, unthriftiness and spoilage of food. Looking broadly at the position today, it is no exaggeration to suggest that the quality of management, and not the quality of the stock is the major factor limiting profitable returns.
