Proper Feed Means Healthier Cows and Better Producers
More than ever in these days of national emergency, is the question ot profitable farming bound up in the considerat.ion of proper feeding. The early days in the life of a young heifer must be a gradual preparation for the later strain of calving and lactation. Thus, the first six months of a calf's life and its first winter are particularly important. The factors of good management and nutritional feeding obviously are very closely bound up with the question of ability to resist disease. Light and air, not only are good for the animal constitutionally, but they also prevent disease organisms from multiplying about the premises. Proper feeding, and a realisation that the animal s capacity to produce as *a two-year-old will depend largely upon her ability to convert feed into milk while retaining sufficient for the development of her bodily structure, are essential. All of which may be summed up by stating that the young heifer needs wise handling, thoughtful feeding and "good management.
