INDOOR BOWLING SEASON j
The season had been a successful one despite the absence of many members in the services. said Mr. A. Bankart. South Taranaki president, at the closing night of indoor bowling at Hawera on Thursday. There was no longer any doubt, he said. whether the sport would become popular in Taranaki. Presenting the U.A.O.D. challenge shield to Mr. L. Toy. Railway team. the patron of the association, Mr. W. Adams. complimented the Railway team on its fonrth successive win. Five hundred clubs had this year participated in the game at Auckland, the New Zealand home of the game. and the finals took a week to decide. he said. As indoor bowling was eomparatively new to the country that result augured well for the future of the game. "We cannot. expect to achieve those figures," Mr. Adams concluded, "but the popularity of the game in the province is indicated by its rapid spread. ' Trophies won during the season were presented, the winners being: U.A.O.D. shield, Railway; champion singles cup, Mr. At Bankart; runner-up, Mr. E. Trigger; champion of champions rink, Hibernians; pairs champions, skips Mr. H. Laurent, leads Mr. E. Corbett. Results of a mixed tourney were: Goodhue, Thomson, Stanford and Adams 23 drew with Whittington. Bernard, Cropp and Toy 23; Moody, Allen, Thomas and Hotter 20 beat Hayson, Cochrane, Laurent and Chadwick 16; Frampton, Hitchcock, Brough and Bell 21 beat Keys, McAsey, Hall and Cummings 13; Rolfe, Trigger and Bridgwood 21 beat Feterson, Bankart and Hopkins 10.
