CHALLENGE CUP

new plymouth rowing

To commemorate the Taranaki Centenary and his association with the club as a foundation member. the president,, Mr. H. C. Collier, has prosented a large silver challcnge cup to the New Plymouth Rowing Club. The presentation was made at the annual meeting on Thursday night. The cup is to be for annual competition between the five crews of the Wanganui, Waitara and New Plymouth rowing associations, Union, Aramoho. Wanganui, Clifton and New Plymouth, and will be decided on an aggregate basis at the New Plymouth Club's annual regatta held early each year. Accompanying the cup will be a silver trophy which will be presented to the captain of the winning crew. The presentation was of particular significance as Mr. Collier has been a member of the Wanganui and Clifton Rowing Clubs as well. . The presentation has historical interest Among the passengcrs on the William Bryan, the first passenger ship to reach Ncw Plymouth, was Mr. Collicr's great grandfaiher, Mr. Jamcs Shaw. He rowed ashore from the William Bryan over the exact spot where the New Plymouth Rowing Club now conducts lts resattas.
