Rec. 11.30 p.m. London, Sept. 27. While the Italians have been stuck at Sidi Barrani- for a week British forces have been active. Early on Wednesday naval guns fired on Italian concentrations from point-blank range. A big explosion was caused and 'a fire was still burning two hours later. Aerial photographs show the success of a Royal Air Force attack on Benghazi. A destroyer is sinking. a big ship is on fire and several other ships have oil leaking from their damaged hulls. Other raids have been equally successful. Great Damage at Tobruk. A Royal Air Force communique at Cairo states that a large force of bombers severely damaged the harbour and foreshore at Tobruk, directly hitting barracks, wharf buildings and motor transport, starting a large fire north of the wharves. All the raiders returned safely. British planes reconnoitred the western desert and effectively raided Assab, Macacca and Berbera. At Meema they started a fire which was visible 50 miles away. An Italian communique from Rome announces that a British submarine sank an Italian torpedo-boat destroyer in the Ionian Sea. The majority of the crew were saved. The British renewed their bombardment of Tobruk. Some private buildings and a field hospftal were damaged. Five persons are dead and ten were wounded. British naval units shelled Siii Barrani. Italian planes attacked a convoy in the Red Sea and bombed the defences of Otrub in the Sudan."
