CRICKET AND THE WAR

STRATFORD CLUB'S VIEW | The desirability of continuing the sport of cricket during' the period of the war was emphasised by Mr. C. McL Young at the annual meeting of the Stratford Cricket Club on Thursday night. Although the seriousness oi the war situation was not; to be underestimated, he considered, it was not in the public interest to curtail all sporting activities. There was an excellent attendance at the meeting. Attention was drawn in a discussion on the report to the satisfactory state of the club's affairs, and it was considered that the results of the past season reflected credit upon • those responsible for administering the club's finances. It was decided to instruct the delegates to the South Taranaki Cricket Association to vote for an early starting time, 1.40 p.m., and to press for one-day fixtures. Subscriptions were fixed at 2s a game, with a maximum of 25s for the season.

Officers elected were: — Patron, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P.; president, Mr. W. A. Brown; vice-presidents, four elected; hon. auditor, Mr. G. C. Grace; hon. secretary, Mr. P. W. Kivell; hon. treasurer, Mr. F. G. Richardson; executive committee, Messrs. M. Beere, Demchy, Walls, Davidson, Eggleton, Lansdown and K, Elgar, and the secretary, treasurer and club captain; club captain. Mr. R. Collins; selectors, club captain, secretary and team captain; delegates to South Taranaki Cricket Association, Messrs. Kivell, Beere and Walls. The meeting decided to place on record its appreciation of the efforts of all who had assisted the club financially, and to make the past season a sporting and social success. Particular referense was made to Mr. W. A. Brown's gift of two bats and £2 2s; to Mr. Young's contribution of 10s fid, and to an anonymous supporter who contributed 10s. New members elected were Messrs. Elgar, Blackmore, Linklater, Brittenden, Davidson, Ford, Gibson, Dorflinger and Fisher.
