AXIS ALLIANCE PLAN
ITALY TO BE SIGNATORY Rec. 9.50 p.m. London, Sept. 26. Authoritative Tokio advices state that Italy is becoming a signatory to the Jap-anese-German alliance, which thus far has not been ratified, but has been agreed to in principle. The Rome correspondent of the Tokio newspaper Yomiuri said the Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Amau, and Count Ciano, Foreign Minister, discussed recent intemational conditions during which conversations Count Ciano is reported to have supported the Japanese entry into Indo-China. It is officially stated at London that the report of a German- Japanese defensive alliance is not confirmed. ( United States officials received with re- j serve reports of the Japanese-German i defence alliance. They have no doubt | that diplomatic collaboration exists, but they regard the Shanghai reports as a trial balloon to test the opinion of the remainder of the world, particularly the United States. Such a pact, it was said, would throw Japan openly into war with Britain, and certainly would aggravate the strained relations with the United States.
