RAILWAY STOCK YARD
minister makes suryey POSITION AT STRATFORD "It appears to me now that I would not be justified under the present circumstances in spending the amount of money needed to shift the Stratfoid railway stock yards," said the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, when interviewed by a Daily News reporter after he had inspected Stratford railway facilities and the southern railway reserve yesterday morning. ' I have undertaken to examine the( proposals submitted to me and when I have done that I will communicate with Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, and others interested," added the Minister. He was accompanied on the inspection by Messrs. Polson, Thomson and F. T. Hale (Chamber of Commerce), who outlined various aspects of the departmental and town proposals that have been made at various times. Referring to the position as it appeared to him at present, the Minister said that while he concurred, as one with 25 years' experience of civic administration, that it was not desirable to have stock yards so much in the centre of a growing community as was the case at Stratford, he could not at present give any definifcfe undertaking to remove the stock yards because of the expense involved. The requirements of war finance had an effect on the provision of railway facilities generally, he continued, and there were very many worthwhile, and almost essential facilities — essential from the viewpoint of keeping pace with the development of the community and the country — which had had to be abandoned or postponed, anyhow, including the new station for Christchurch which was badly needed, both from the viewpoint of the department. and the public.
