BLITZKRIEG RESUMPTION TERRIFIC BARRAGE MET

Rec. 8.50 p.m. London, Sept. 24. After a break of only a few hours Germany resumed her blitzkrieg against England yesterday. Large formations of German planes met a terrific barrage and dogfights occurred as the raiders retreated, one fighter plunging into the sea. Reports show that eight German planes were shot down. Of four British fighters lost the pilots of three are safe. Nazi airmen in the renewed raids seemed to be aiming at the central areas of London. Sixteen bombs within a few minutes are reported to have dropped near a north London hospital. Among the bombs dropped in another area was an aerial torpedo. The raiders were also active over Wales. During the morning two enemy formations, consisting of bombers escorted by large numbers of fighters, made attacks across the Kent coast and in the area of the Thames estuary." Neither force penetratcd to London. Some bombs were dropped on Thamesside towns and a number of districts ln East Kent. Damage was caused to houses and buildings bui the number of casualties was small. Early in the afternoon an enemy attack was made on the Southampton area. Some buildings were damaged and a number of casualties caused. Enemy activity was not on a large scale but in attacks by single aircraft bombs were dropped in a number of districts, including Brighton. Damage was caused to houses and business premises and a number of casualties is reported. Twenty-one Dorniers appeared over the Kent coast in the second daylight mass attack on London. Waves of Messerschmitts circled around the bombers, which encountered fierce anti-aircraft. fire and were driven back after 10 minutes.
