, tp' 1 P. J. Powell, New Plymouth, is to proceed to Wellington on October 3 in the infantry training unit No. 2 in the 4th reinforcements. The Rev. L. O. Beere, an Anglican missionary who has spent 11 years in Korea, is taking his leave at Wellington instead of England, and is visiting his cousin, Mr. R. St. J. Beere. Mr. E. F. Hemingway, Mayor of Patea, weleomed Mr. J. R. Wallace, formerly of Marton, to the town on Tuesday night at the school committee and Wanganui Education Board meeting. The death has occurred at New Plymouth of Mr. W. L. Thompson, formerly of Wellington. Mr. Thompson was born at Saltwater Crcek in North Canterbury, from where, as a yonng man, he went to Wellington and started business as a building contrnctor in partnership with M:\ I. Clark. The firm became well known in the city and complcted many large contracts. The partnership was eventually dissolved and Mr. Thompson continued as a master builder for many years at Wellington. He erected the Seamen's Mission, the Y.M.C.A. and o'"\er prominent buildings. He was always an ardent church worker and had been actively connected with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church since coming to New Plymouth 16 years ago. He is survived by his wife, a son, Mr. L. K. Thompson, and a" daughter, Miss R. Thompson.
