JEWELS IN HIDING
SCOTTISH STATE GEMS Scotland's priceless jewelled crown, sceptre, and sword of State — studded with gold, amethysts, topazes and diamonds — have been removed from their showcase at Edinburgh Castle and sent into hiding until war is over. Their whereabouts are now secret. Before they could be moved a meeting — the first since 1830 — of the Officers of State had to be held. The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Ernest Brown) keeper of the Great Seal, presided at the meeting. , The regalia, the oldest in Britain, can not be taken out of the country, since the act of union with England contained special provision for their retention in Scotland.
