GEORGE CROSS AWARD
Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 23. The new decoration, the George Cross. is intended to be a reward for a deed of valour by civilian men and women in all walks of life. Like the Victoria Cross, after which it ranks, postliumous grants may be made and the cross will be worn before all orders and other decorations. It will take the place of Empire gallantry medals, the present holders of which will receive a cross in substitution. The George Medal will be granted more freely for civilian deeds of bravery, al though it is intended the sUndard will be high. Lord Chatfield, chairman of the committee on gallantry awards for civil defence, is charged with ensuring that immediate reports are made by authorities and organisations concerned. There will be a small military division of the George Cross to enable special awards to be made to members of the services. The George Medal will rank with medals for gallantry and distinguished conduct.
