HOME GUARD PLAN
STRATFORD SUGGESTION Commander of the Home Guard that is being formed in New Zealand. MajorGeneral R. Youn'g has written to Mr. P. Thomson, Mayor of Stratford, thanking him for suggestions inade in a recent letter that the commander should draw up a programme covering the formation and operations of the units of the guard. Mr. Thomson also deplored any suggestion that members of the guard should appoint their own officers which, he contended, savoured of Soviet practice and was not conducive to the maintenance of the best discipline. "I have made certain recommendations for the appointment of district and area commandersv and these are at present being considered by Cabinet," writes Major-General Young. "I need hardly assure you that full consideration will be given to every recommendation forwarded by the Returned Soldiers' Association." "Immediately a decision concerning district and area appointments has been made by . Cabinet I propose to discuss the whole question of local appointments with my district commanders," concludes the letter. "Until this is done I am afraid I can give you no further information in connection with the scheme."
