ISOLATED ATTACKS

j RAIDS DURING DAYLIGHT ' Rec. 9.50 p.m. London, Sept. 23. i Tlie Air. Ministry announced late last i night that air activity in daylight was 1 confined to isolated raids. A Kentish ! church was shattered by bombs, it being i the district's fourth church to be demolj ished in that fashion. Raiders caused ' further casualties in south-east towns in j the afternoon. "There was no enemy air activity on I a large scale this morning, although iso- ' lated aircraft crossed the east and south coasts from time to time, stated an eailier Air Ministry and Home Security Ministry communique. "Some of these | penetrated inland over East Anglia. A j few reached London. Bombs were | dropped in country districts of East An1 glia, Hampshire and Kent, in two towns S in Sussex and in north-west and south- ! east districts of London. A number of I houses were hit and some were damaged.

Damage was caused to gas and water mains. A small number of people have been reported killed and injured. One enemy bomber was shot down during the day." „ Another joint communique stated: An attack made shortly before dark on Saturday evening in the south-east of England was not heavy. A few bombs weie dropped in the south-west outskirts of the London area and at a few places in Kent and Sussex. The damage caused was slight and no casualties were reported. "It is now known that a second enemy bomber was shot down by our fighters yesterday afternoon. Our fighters suffered no loss during the day. By night enemy activity was somewhat more widespread than on the previous nights Ihough London was again the principal objective. Bomb.s were dropped in several paris of the capital nnd once more Ihe attack was heaviest in Ihe eastern and southern districts. A town in the north-west of England was also attacked. In these two areas houses were .destroyed and damaged and fires were started. Most of them were quickly brought under control and it was largely due to the work of the fire services that the damage caused was not more serious. There have been a number of casualties, some of them fatal. "In the south-east of England outside the London area a number of houses were destroyed by bombs and some casualties were caused. one of which was fatal. Elsewhere little damage has been reported.
