PROPAGANDA LIES
NEW ZEALANDERS ABROAD "They are awful liars." In these words Lieut.-Colonel F. S. Varnham discribed the propaganda tactics of the Italians in a recent letter received by Mrs. Varnham, New Plymouth. "The other day," he writes. ' "the Italians broadcast that they had killed 80 per cent. of the New Zealanders with bombs. Actually nobody was hurt." He mentions a number of New Plymouth officers in the force and says they are all fit and well. Those he refers to are Major G. H. Thomson, Major S. Hartnell, Lieutenants J. Hutchinson, K. Staunton, E. Morton, and David Thomson. Colonel Varnham speaks of a considerable quantity of mail received in the New Zealanders' camp but one message was a particularly interesting one. A cable reached him on August 29 which read: "Golf Diggers Fitzroy Sunday send greetings Taranaki boys.— Burgess." Colonel Varnham said he had the cable published in battalion orders for the day, for the boys to see. "It was very nice of the diggers and Sid Burgess and we greatly aporeciated It," said the letter. Felt Hats Discarded. "We are .wearing sun helmets now," continues the letter. "They have the New Zealand badge in front. They look quite smart but take a bit of getting used to the appearance after our felt hats. "Spread out as we are here each company does Its own cooking and feeding arrangements. This applies also to the officers, so each company has its own little officers' mess, consisting of a tent. . . . For field work like this we purchased some time ago two small kerosene stoves and the men all have their own mess utensils, and the company keep a few spares for mess visitors."
