AUROA SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE At the monthly meeting of the Auroa school committee Mr. J. C. Duff presided over a full attendance. The head teacher, Mr. F. W. Kerr, reported that the present roll numher was 109. The third term's quota of library books had been received from Hawera. Arbour Day was celebratcd at the end of last term when a number of flowering, and other shrubs were planted along the drive and eight native trees were addcd to the nature shrubbery. The school committee assisted with the planting and Messrs. J. C. Duff (chairman of the committee). D. Wards (chairman of the South Taranaki school committees' Association), Mr. R. Green and Mr. Rod Syme (who supervised the laying out of the new shrubbery). All present were the guests of the staff at afternoon tea. As a result of a concert given by the pupils of Mr. and Mrs. Antoni Bonnetti over £11 was raised for school funds. Fifty carrot . roots, specially selected, were being grown for seed in the garden plot Forty-two cntries had been received for the boys' and girls' club competitions. Thcse were as follows: Calves (34, a record entry), potato plots (6), carrots (1), sugar beet (1). The pupils were collecting non-ferrous metals as a patriotic effort and the school was being used as a depot for the purpose. In view of the approaching jubilee celebrations, the committee appointed a deputation to wait on the chairman of the Education Board in connection with the matter of a new school. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr. D. Wards for his donation of lime and to Mr. R. Green for presenting a weeping fir to the school. A motion of sympathy with Mrs. F. W. Kerr on the death of her brother, was expressed. Auroa Library. The Auroa library has linked .up with the New Zealand Country Library Service and the first quota of 50 books has been received, These consist of modern fiction (30) and general literature (20). There is a wide variety which will be greatly appreciated by the reading public of • the district. Personal. Mr. J. C. Duff, Auroa Road, has been sworn in as a justice of the peace. . Mr. Duff, son of the late Mr. William Duff, has been a resident of the district for over 20 years. In addition to being a successful farmer he has always taken a keen interest in the welfare of the district. He is at present chairman of the school committee, a position which he has held , for nearly ten years, chairman of the patriotic committee, a .member of the pipe band and the bowling club and a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church. The district has been without the services of a justice of the peace since the. departure of Mrs. C. Benton. Mr. and Mrs. D. Suthcrland, formerly of Kaponga, have been sepnding several days with friends in the district before leaving for theig new home. Miss I. Scott, Wellington, was the guest of Mrs. S. W. Bailey recently. Miss K. Heron, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. A. W. King. Miss J. Richardson visited Hawera as the guest of Mrs. R. L. Hooper. Mr. H. H, Buxton is visiting Wellington. Miss Jean Hooper, Hawera, visited friends in the district recently. Mr. W. J. Sandford has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. G. E. I. Bigham and family will leave early' in the week to live at Eltham.
