Hawera Gifts for Lcpers. In response to the appeal for gifts for the lepers on Makogai Island, 1250 miles from Auckland, the Voluntary Aid Detachment of the Hawera Red Cross Society has collected three cases of articles, which include light materials for women and children's clothes, silk and embroidery cottons, children's games, fishing lines, soaps, conficctionery, books, and books on legal work. Patea Card Evening. Mrs. r. Ramsbottom was hostess at a card evening at Patea on Tuesday in aid of Patea Croquet Glub funds. Sixteen were present and winners of the progressive five hundred were Mrs. J. Kelsen and Mr. F. Ramsbottom. Emergency Precautions. The first of the training classes in fire brigade routine and instruction being given to members of the Hawera Emergency Corps was held at the fire station on Tuesday night, when 18 boys were introduced to the elements of fire fighting.
