PATEA RED CROSS MEETS

It was decided at a meeting of the executive of the Patea Red Cross this week to open all meetings with prayer, the. Rev. w. h. Walton stating that it was customary with most institutions at the present time to do so. The offer of the Patea Hospital Board to train any members of the society in hospital nursing was accepted with thanks, Mrs. a. Carey explaining that in addition to hospital nursing, training would be given in kitchen and laundry work. The trainees would be required to spend 40 hours in the kitchen, made up of 10 days at four hours a day. It was decided to hold the society's fair on December 7, the schools in the district to be asked to assist with folk dancing and exhibitions of children's work. The Patea Municipal Band is to be asked to assist. Mrs. Hemingway reported that since the last meeting the following had been sen.t to the Red Cross depot, Wellington: Ten pairs pyjamas, 3 bed jackets, 5 cholera belts, 5 bed caps, 12 ditty bags, 38 many-tailed bandages, 8 t bandages, 6 hot water bottle covers, 6 balaclavas, 1 scarf, 2 pairs sox, 14 pairs mittens, 1 parcel old linen. Included in the monthly goods were 17 many-tailed bandages and three red flannel capes from the Alton branch. Seventeen pairs of mittens, three pairs of gloves, 11 scarves and nine balaclavas were sent to the National Patriotic Fund Board, Wellington. Mrs. Pettigrew had commenced showing the pupils of the Patea school how to dress and make rag dolls and the children appeared vcry-keen on the work. Mrs. Pettigrew was to be congratulated on the amount of work and preparation carricd out, said Mrs. Hemingway. Eight golliwogs had already been handed in for sale in December and Mrs. e. o. Horner had made the bedclothes fo'r the doll's bed presented by Miss b. Martin.
