HAWERA TRACK WORK
FINAL MARTON GALLOPS The final work of Hawera horses engaged at Marton was performed yesterday under splendid weather and lmproved track conditions. The trestles were out 45 feet. Sea Link, High Tone and Winsome Lu were responsible for good efforts. Although holding, the track afforded much better going than on Tuesday. As usual H. Scally was first out, sending War Lap (Toki) and Viracious (TuMi) six furlongs. War Lap showed to advantage over his companion in lm 23ls. War Lap is in tiptop order for Stratford next month. Gitana Lass (Sexton) went leisurely over four furlongs in 58s. Gitana Lass is also holding her condition well. Sea Link (Sexton) impressed by finishing alongside Stencil (Holland) , to whom she was conceding considerable weight, at the end of four furlongs in 52 4-5s, a capital . gallop under the conditions. Disturbed (Turu), acting as schoolmaster for Min Vaals (Toki), led over a round of the schooling- hurdles, jumpmg splendidly. Min Vaals did well for a novice. r_r Chief Lord (Ryan) and Air Flight Donald) were companions running together to the three furlongs in 41 2-5s. Chief Lord went on to complete half a mile in 55s. Showing continued improvement, the two-year-olds Miss Phaleron (Reilly) and Ra Rena (Graham) dashed up the straight twice; Considerable interest was taken m the Marton Handicap candidate, Winsome Lu. Starting ' more smartly than usual from the seven furlongs, Winsome Lu (Reilly) covered her first two furlongs in 27s and was joined by Silyer Gift (Whiro) at three furlongs, traversed in 41s. The half mile was reached in 54s and, given a kick in the' straight, Winsome Lu finished a head in front of Silver Gift, covering her seven furlongs in lm 36s. Silver Gift's time for the halfmile was 55s. Both are to be ridden by H. S. Wiggins to-morrpw and promise to run prominently. Friesland (Holland) , who is rapidly approaching racing form, finished up his pace work on the sand by sprintmg three furlongs in 391s. Tavoy (Mills) performed useful pace work. Le Marquise and Martene were given half pace work. , , „ . Resingold (Ryan) and Gold Grip (Graham), accompanied by Val Pere (Whiro) for two furlongs covered in 27 2-5s, completed three in 411s and half a mile in 55Js. -j The Marton-engaged two-year-olds Retort (McDonald) and High Tone (Holland) were companions over three furlongs. Retort began best, but High Tone, who had a big advantage in the weights, was soon on terms and the pair straightened up for the run to the post on even terms. Fifty yards from the post High Tone asserted herself to win by two lengths in a tick under 40s. With a good jump .out on Saturday High Tone's Pr0®" pects look promising. Retort is to be ridden by W. Stevens and High Tone by W. J. Broughton. With the exception of getting in too close to the final obstacle, Chiltern (W. Grindlay) gave a good exhibition over a round of the schooling hurdles. The two-year-olds Ring Chief (Holland) and Battle Dress (Cole) scampered up from the two furlongs post in 25s, finishing on even terms. Looking bright and fined down a bit, Royal Star II resumed track exercise, giving the impression that he has done plenty of road work. . Barry Boy, who contracted a chill, is on the easy list. Veldette has rejoined J. Browns team and looks much benefited by her let-up. Veldette showed a lot of pace last season and can be expected to be more solid season
