SURF LIFE-SAVING
EAST END CLUB MEETS Notwithstanding unfavourable weather the ' 1939-40 season wgs successful, '■ said the report presented to the annual meeting- of the EaSt End Surf Club at New Plymouth last night. The club retained the under 18 years junior championship. The club was represented at the New Zealand centenary surf championships at Wellington and the West Coast championships at Wanganui. Members also took an active partin swimming carnivals throughout Taranaki and met with much success. Membership of the club stood at 22. The financial statement showed that receipts totalled £41 0s lOd and expenditure £33. 4s 8d, leaving a credit balance of £7 16s 2d after a payment of, £20 to the borough council. Many improvements were . made to the clubhouse, including the painting of the roof an'd "look-out" tower, . and finishing off the interior. Beaches under the club's control were well patrolled and several rescues were effected, one needing the application .of artificial respiration. ' . The club was unfortunate in losihgfive of its senior members — Messrs.- E. P Coleman, J. I. Henderson, A. C.'Sims, F. Herbert , and Burke— who were now serving overseas with the expeditionary forqes. The, first three were the club's oldest members. Six more would shortly be going.into the territorial camp. Thanks were extended to the secretary . Mr. Gs Henderson, Miss E. Smith, honorary auditor, and those who assisted ths club duying the season. ■ These were abnorrnal times, said Mr F.-A. Coleman, chairman, in moving the adoption of the report. He appealed tc old members and young swimmers tc assist the club in the most necessarj work of patrolling the beaches. All the clubs were similarly, affected by the loss of members to overseas and territorial forces, but- it was essential to continue the work on the beaches, which woulc still be used by women and children. H was up to the young people to keep the club gping till enlisted members . returned. . Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr. S. J. Smith; president, Mr. F. A Coleman; vice-presidents, nine elected club captain, Mr. J. Steptoe; vice clut captain, Mr. A. Clarke; coach, Mr. N Berge; secretary, Mr. G. Henderson; auditor, Miss E. Smith; honorary surgeon Dr, D. E. Brown; delegates to Royal Life | Saving Society, Messrs. A. Clarke and J I Ettershank; delegates to surf association I Messrs. J. and R. Steptoe and N. Berge ! delegates to swimming association | Messrs.' I. Falk and F. A. Coleman; representatives on combined clubs' committee, Messrs. N. Berge and C. _ Thomson; executive, Messrs. R. Julian, C Thomson, J. Ettershank, I. Falk and D McCracken. Subscriptions were fixed at 6s (reducible to 5s) for seniors, 3s Gd for junior: 'and ls for boys. Messrs. J. Cattley, R. Bingham and J Eyers were elected members.
