RECENT WATER SHORTAGE
When. the Kaponga Town Board met recently Mr. Allan R. Bates was in the chair. There was a full attendance of commissioners. The electrical engineer, Mr. J. G. Green, reported that there had been a shortage of water on eight days of the month. The plant had been shut down for two hours on two occasions through water shortage. There had been 54,520 units generated as against 57,280 units in the corresponding month last year. There were 61,466 units purchased as against 50,866, and the increase in bought and generated units was 7840 equal to 7.2 per cetrt. The maximum demand had increased from 166 k.v.a. to 178 k.v.a. The increase in the maximum demand and units was well balanced and kept the load factor the same. A total of 2000 units a month was being saved by the installation of time switches on water heaters. The supply of bulk power had been satisfactory and the cost was £182, equal to .71d per unit. The connected load for the month was 38.588 k.w., comprising 24 lights, 13 heat points, two ranges, eight water heaters, four milking motors, one water pump and one factory motor increased by two horse-power. Part of the new line on the Mangawhero Road had been livened up giving supply to three consumers. The second section would be connected when another transformer came to hand towards the end of the month. The foreman, Mr. T. Glass, reported that he had cieancd out watertables on Eltham Road and attended to sewerage and to general maintenance work. Grass seed had been sown at the park and the buildings had been cleaned out. The health inspector, Mr. J. W. Brindlecombe, reported on the water supply and sewerage. He recommended slight alterations to the filter channels and it was decided to have an inspection made with a view to having the work done. A ratepayer inquired as to the incidence of charges for extraordinary water supply and it was decided to obtain a report on the position and then review the charges made. Arrangements were made in conjunction with Mr. Rod Syme for the schools' centcnnial tree planting to take place at the lower domain on the occasion of the visit of the Minister of Internal Affairs. the Hon. W. E. Parry, on September 27. As several schools will be assembled for the purpose the Minister is to be asked to address the children and to plant a tree before opening the centennial memorial restroom. Certain preliminary work is to be done at once in readiness for the planting ceremony. The Audit Department returned the balance-sheets of the Town, Cemetery and Domain Boards without any tag and commented on the small amount of arrears outstanding. The chai an congratulated the clerk on the excellent result of his work.
