HOME GUARD ACTIVITY
MAYOR WANTS A SCHEME STRATFORD FORMATION The desirability of a comprehensive programme for the formation of Horne Guard units being i'ssued by the New Zealand Commandant wa s mentioned by the Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, at a meeting of the Stratford Borough Council. Such a programme, he said, would ensue uniformity throughout New Zealand. He had not yet had a reply from the commandant, but hoped to receive it before he took steps to form the Stratford unit. , The finance committee reported that it would be legally permissible for the Stratford Citizens' Band committee s sum of £200, held in trust by the council, to be lent to the Government as a war loan. The money was set aside by the band for a building fund. Seyton Street from Broadway to Juliet Street, Page Street, from Hamlet Street to Brecon Road, and Broadway South, from Opunake Road to Warwick Road, a total distance of 61 chains, were regraded and coated with pit gravel, reported the foreman, Mr. R. Richards. The staff was at present engaged in regrading Warwick Road west footpath and Orlando Street south from Romeo Street to Warwick Road. The work at the Miranda Street entrance to the public hospital was completed. Paths were tarred and soil put in where required at the State housing footpath extension. The painting of pedestrian crossing signposts at Page Street was completed. Work required at the boiling down works was completed and a recommendation had gone forward for the registration of the premises, reported the borough inspector, Mr. A. E. Sayers. Work on the renovations at the town hall was progressing satisfactorily.-stated Mr. Sayers. The hard board for the hall and stage had arrived. "Trouble occurred on August 5 in the power board area and the borough supply was off for 20 minutes," stated the electrical inspector, Mr. A. E. Pollock. The month's work was mainly taken up with the renewal of service lines to consumers' premises following alterations by the Post and Telegraph Department. Owing to minor troubles occurring on the power board lines in the borough the power had to be cut off on the borough supply to allow repairs to be carried out. One of these troubles occurred in Pembroke. Road, Broadway corner, and the other was to remove a source of trouble which was affecting radio reception in Opunake Road. On Saturday, August 31, at 2 p.m. a shut down was made to allow repairs to be carried out to power board lines in Broadway north. Units •consumed during the month totalled 429,150, an increase of 15,200 over the total for the same month of last year of 413,950 units. The k.v.a. reading of 947 for the month was an increase of 62 over the reading for August, 1939. The comparative revenue figures for August were: Outstanding £131 (£135); gross, £2332 (£2193); cash £1659 (£1601); discount £649 .(£595); arrears £155 (£126). Following a request by a deputation from the management committee of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, consisting of Dr. W. P. P- Gordon and Mr. W. Taylor, the council decided that the parking area outside the church in Regan Street be metalled.
