LEAGUE CYCLE NOTES

(By "Wheel.")

NEW PLYMOUTH SERIES

With one race to be decided before the end of the Fleet Cup series, the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League is still continuing with its fortnightly cycle races, although the members have been greatly depleted by enlistments. Last Saturday's race to Tariki and back, a distance of 34 miles, .was raced under ideal weather conditions. The winner, S. McKain, riding off 8 minutes, rode a very solid race, and is the club's most promising young rider. J. McConnell surprised all by sprinting into second place. Owing to his work he has not been able to compete as often as he has wished. With the track season coming on he should be very prominent. A fine effort was also made by L. Zimmerman, a very keen starter who rode well to finish third and should ride a solid race in the 50 miles New Zealand championship next Saturday at Waitara. L. Standing deserves much credit for his riding. Although he has not been placed this season, one will always see him at the starting post full of enthusi-

asm. Owing to territorial enlistments C. jury and T. Foote were unable to compete regularly in the final series. Both these boys are good riders. Tim Foote especially has often proved a keen opponent to the scratch men. G. Candy has been less fortunate this season, starting not far enough from the scratch men to keep away. He has to ride very hard to pick up his break on the next bunch, but his luck may be better next Saturday. One of New Zealand s best riders, Frank Candy, is still on scratch and always rides a very solid race. Next Saturday's 50 miles New Zealand championship should provide a great contest between Candy, L. McKain and Ken Fish, Auckland, for the fastest time. Ken Fish won the fastest time honours in the Waitara "50" last season. and is expected down to defend his title next Saturday. As he rides very solidly on the return journey he should provide interesting competition for Taranaki's best.
