"BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940"
OPENING AT THE PLAZA TO-NIGHT. "Broadway Melody of 1940," which will commenee a season at the Plaza Theatre, Stratford, to-night, with Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell, is a peak dancing picture. There is good music and unlimited splendid dancing, new routines, perfect taps. The romance is between Eleanor and Fred. As well as giving a perfect dancing exhibition. George Murphy's acting is extremely attractive, and Frank Morgan repeats previous successes as an amusing show producer Eleanor and Astaire are superb. Minor characters are exceptionally well handled by Ian Hunter, Florence Rice, Lynne Carver and Ann Morris. "Begin the Beguine" is one of the six Cole Porter songs to which dances have been created by the stars. Other numhers include 'J Concentrate on You," "Please Don t Monkey With Broadway," "I Happen to Be in Love," "Between You and Me," and "I've Got My Eyes on You." There will be an excellent pre-interval programme.
