JERSEY CATTLE CLUB
summer show proposals The holding of a club show during the late spring or early summer instead of the usual field day and demonstration is being considered by the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club committee, which appointed a sub-committee comprising Messrs. A. J. Luxton, A. R. Bayly and the chairman, Mr. D. B. Ballantyne, to submit a report to a special meeting. It was a good time of the year to hold the show, which should be strictly limited to club membCrs, said Mr. A. R. Bayly, who brought the proposal forward. He suggested that the show should be held late in October or early in November. That was perhaps the time when farmers were least busy, as it was between the seasons when feeding out had finished, and before ensilage and haymaking had started. It was a good time to show stock, which would not need much preparation. It would also give ' members an opportunity of showing stock that might have gone off the bloom ■ by the autumn. ' Such a show would be a change from the field days and would give members an opportunity of meeting and discussing problems. He pointed to the outstanding success of the Inglewood club's show. There were, of course, difficulties in the way, but • there should not be any pessimism, as farmers were asked to carry on with testing and their other farming activities to an even greater extent than before the war. The labour factor would be the, main deterrent, it was considered by Mr. H. C. Sampson. who pointed out farmers were hard put to it to get sufficient labour to carry out their ordinary farm operations. The Inglewood club certainly was to be congratulated on the exceilence of its show, but Mr. Sampson pointed out that that show had included horse sections, which appealed to the public, without whose support the proposed show would not be a financial success. In further discussion it was pointed out that the boys and girls' agricultural club's championship field day was held in the middle of December and the suggestion was made that the Jersey Cattle Club might perhaps arrange to have a few classes included in that day's programme. The suggestion was referred to a subcommittee for its consideration. Mr. C. G. C. Dermer, Cheltenham, president of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association, intimated his willingness to visit Taranaki and address meetings of breeders at different centres on the selective registration scheme which the Jersey Council proposed to introduce. It was decided to leave the arrangement of the itinerary to Messrs. D- B. Ballantyne and S. G. Morgan. a suggestion being made that the meetings should be held during March. The following .
