PATRIOTIC FUNDS

KAPONGA COMMITTEE When the Kaponga patriotic controlling committee met recently Mr. A. R. Bates presided. The accounts in connection with the farewell to the third echelon were presented. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs. I. T. Webster and C. Paterson jnr. was set up to handle the local collection of scrap metal. Advice was received from the Department of I Internal Affairs that future appeals would be made through the provinces with advertising on a national basis, and that permission for raffles for articles of the value of under £5 could be obtained from the Taranaki committee. The secretary announced that permission had been obtained to raffle at Kaponga and | Opunake a suite of furniture donated by ! Mr. P. H. Harding. Mrs. John Guy, president of the Red Cross Society, thanked the committee for assistance in. connection with the Red Cross appeal. The chairman commented on the apathy of country residents. The town people had responded loyally and worked hard. It was suggested that a scheme of weekly donations could be instituted and that farmers could arrange for dairy factories to make payments on their behalf. but | in view of the impending Dominion1 wide appeal no action was taken. ' A total of £65 17s 5d has been raised for patriotic purposes to date as a result of various appeals and efforts in the Kaponga district. The total is made up as follows: Provincial patriotic fund collection, £128 5s ld; sick, wounded and distressed appeal, £345 6s ld; surplus of farewells to first and second echelons, £25 ls 5d; surplus of farewells to third echelon, £21 8s; card evening, £28 17s 9d; Miss M. Lawrence concert, £18 10s ld; Hawera Technical School concert, £13 12s 3d; patriotic football match, £10 18s: competitions and. auctions, £4 17s lOd; Standard car raffe (share), £40; donations (as follows), Zimmerman farewell committee £1 9s 6d, bowling club £2 6s 6d, hockey club £1 10s 7d; Awatuna W.D.F.U., £4 4s; Lucas and Co. Ltd.. special discount, £1 7s 4d; Mr. ! R. E. Williams, £2; Anonymous, £2; for Y.M.C.A. work, £15 0s lld; sundries, 3s; total, £651 17s 5d.
