NEW WINDJAMMERS
SWEDEN BUILDING FLEET London, July' 13. Sweden is building a fleet of modern , windjammers — medium-sized sailing ; ships which will be equipped with Diesel I engines. They will be employed in the coastal trade around the Scandinavian ports, carrying cargoes which are not urgent. When the wind is favourable they will be propelled by sail. The engines will only be used in adverse conditions. Twelve of these vessels are- now under construction. They are being budt by standardised mass production principles. The first has been launched at the Oskafshamn shipyard, on the east coast , of Sweden. . She is 111 feet long and can I carry over 250 tons of cargo. The propelling machinery consists of , a semi-Diesel engine developing 225 h.p. j and powerful enough to give a speed of 11 knots. All these vessels will have a yacht-like appearance with clipper stems. There will be spacioUs and modern accommodation for the crew. All the ropes and yards will be mechianicaily controlled. In fact. every Tab-our-saving device that is known will be employed. In that way operating costs will be low.
