EARLIER ATTEMPT
INVADING FLEET STARTS REFERENCES IN LETTERS New York, Sept. 11. Lfetters to French residents from independent sources in Paris and occupied-France reveal that a Nazi attempt to land troops in England in j August failed disastrously, says the J New York Sun. An invading fleet started from St. Malo with the expectation of landing on the west coast of England, but the attempt proved suicidal. Two letters referred to the incident, both surmising that the news had already been published outside France. Both gave no details and did not give the date, but one dated August 28 referred casually to the "suicidal attempt at disembarkation." A letter from Paris from a French official acting as liaison officer with the German army stated: "Paris is full of German officers having a wonderful time, hoping to be allowed to stay and especially hoping and praying not to be chosen to participate in another disastrous attempt to disembark troops in England."
