THREE-YEAR-OLD FORM CHANCES REVIEWED
The presence of several candidates tor j the Guineas on the second day of the meeting is giving additional interest to | the Flying Handicap on the opening day . of the Avondale Racing Club's spring j meeting to-mcrrow. The topweight Royevrus is better known as a middle distance performei but he usually begins well and after his bold showing in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting at Ellerslie last month may command a following. The New Plyinouth representative Saxon Tor has 8.13 or one pound less that Royevrus. Saxon Tor displayed excellent form last autumn. It will be in his favour that he is a fast beginner, but as he has not raced since last Easter he may be all the better for the race. Foal Stakes Winner. As the winner of the Great Northern Foal Stakes Lou Rosa must be respected. He disappointed at the Pakuranga meeting last month but is reported to have made good progress in the interval. Though the successes of Brazen • Bold during the winter were over seven furlongs he is likely to make a bold showing in the event as he usually begins well. Orate has been working well enough to suggest that he may be capable of staging a return to his best form, in which case 8.4 would be a luxurious impost for him. Smart as -Two-Year-Old. Erndale will be racing on his home track. He won the open sprints on both days of this meeting last year and his form during the winter was good enough to suggest that he may make a bold bid to-morrow. Gay Miss was a smart two-year-old last year when she won three races in quick succession in February. She is a good beginner, who has only to' fulfil her last season's promise to reach good sprint class. Blonde Princess has not raced since her stylish win on the opening day at Trentham in July. On that occasion she made a good field of sprinters look moderates and is likely to be one of the main fancies for this event. Winner at Pakuranga. At the end of the autumn Phaleron was close to the best of the two-year-olds, winning the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes. He has been working well at Ellerslie and may be iri the picture at the finish'. The manner in which Royal Message won the Admiralty Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting was impressive. She came with a fine finishing run to score nicely. She has worked well enough in the interval to suggest that she will make a bold bid. Valimeen is speedy but is not consistent. Grandora was backed and 'beaten at the Pakuranga meeting but on that occasion he did not jump out with his usual brilliancy and had a good deal of ground to make up in the middle. stages with the result that he weakened in the straight. . If he jumps out well tomorrpw he may prove troublesome. Marshall Hall and Llandaff. Maxam and Foxmond are both capable of upsetting calculations if caught at their best but in the absence of recent form they are not likely to be fancied runners. The manner in which Marshall Hall won a double at Ellerslie last Easter stamped him as a two-year-old above the average. As reports from Te Rapa credit him with having progressed favourably in his three-year-old preparation he may be capable of a forward showing. His attractive autumn form and his recent good track work will assure Llandaff of a solid following if the going is firm. He is speedy out of the tapes. Brazilian did well enough at the Ellerslie winter meeting to suggest that he is not without prospects.
The Remainder. For a classic winner last season Queen City appears to be favourably treated with only two pounds above the minimum. Happicoat, who was also a useful two-year-old, disappointed at Pakuranga but may do better in this race. Surella, who has been galloping in good style at Takanini, ran well enough in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga gathering to suggest that he may be capable of a surprise. Land Girl is likely to be at a long price. The fancies may include Blonde Princess, Llandaff, Royal Message and Saxon Tor.
