WAITARA CYCLING

WIN FOR R. ROSSER R. Rosser won the Waitara Cycle and Athletic Club's final race of the series. Of a field of eleven starters, only three finished. Eight riders were victims of either mechanical defects, punctures or spills. Rosser again rode well to win narrowly from the scratch men by 27 seconds " af ter riding the whole journey of 39 miles to Tariki and back unassisted. Officials on duty were: Judges. Messrs. J. C. Whittaker, J. Johnson, T. Taylor, C. Mana; road steward, Mr. C. Hansen; starter and time-keeper, Mr. R. Yardley. Results were: R. Rosser (14m.) 1, F. Candy (scr) 2, L. McKain (scr) 3. Fastest time. F. Candy, lh. 40m. 52 l-5s. After covering only three miles Oliver punctured and retired. At the same place McConnell and Smith collided and were forced to return home. At Inglewood Standing was leading Rosser by 20s., with thp 4m. and 7m. men 6^m. further back. The scratch men at this stage were losing time to the 4m. bunch, being 5m. behind them. Just after leaving Inglewood Standing had chain trouble and was forced out of the race. At Rugby Road S. McKain had a spill and A. Strachan retired. At Inglewood on the return Rosser was riding strongly and was 51m. in front of G. Candy and Zimmerman. with the scratch mou 4 ;m. behind them. Shortly afterwards G. Candy retired. At Lepperton Rosser still held a good lead but was tiring, and after tuming off the Mountain Road his pace dropped more still. In the meantime L. McKain and F. Candy were making good time and over the concluding stages it was touch and go whether they would catch the leader or not. At Waiongona bridge Zimmerman had the misfortune to pick up a stick and lost most of the spokes out of his front wheel. This was bad luck for him as he had ridden a really good race. Rosser crossed the line about 300 yards in front of F. Candy, who narrowly led. L. McKain for second and fastest time. Series aggregnte points are: F. Candy 21, G. Candy 13. A. Strachan 9, L. McKain 8. , ... On September 21 the Waitara club will conduct the 50 miles New Zealand road championship. Application has also been made to hold the 50 miles New Zealand junior championship in conjunction with the senior evcnt. but confirmation of this will not be available until later in the week
