"DEATH TRAP"
STONES ON ROADSIDE Stones at the pa corner at Waitara and at Chatterton's corner on the main road beyond the bridge were characterised by Cr. J. C. Blar.chard as an absolute death trap that should be removed before a terrible accident occurred, at the Waitara Borough Council meeting last night. It was decided to have the stones removed and the road patched up. Attention was first drawn to the danger by Cr. C. D. Tate, who expressed the opinion that the council should ask the Main Highways Board to have the stones, which were above the level of the road, removed and the road repaired. Mr. F. W. Lindup, district engineer, had stated that if the stones were considered a danger the council could have them removed, said Cr. L. H. Sampson, who understood that the cost would be met by the Main Highways Board. He understood that an Urenui car had turned over at the corner. The stones should never have been put there, said Cr. Blanchard, who pointed out that it was three years since attention had been drawn to the danger. It was indeed surprising that there had not been more accidents. The stones had not been put there by the Main Highways Board. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Hughson): The Main Highways Board has taken over the road as it existed. If the war had not intervened, the Main Highways Board would have made improvements to the road, said the Mayor, who added that he would lnstruct, the foreman to make the necessary repairs.
