LARGE AMOUNT PAID IN

The Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, announced yesterday that a total of £36,121 13s 3d had been paid in on account of the £100,000 aeroplane fund, reports the Press Association. Of that amount the New Zealand Herald (Auckland) contribution was £25,592 12s 3d and the Southland Fighter Fund £10,500. The Wellington Evening Post's total collection to date for this fund amounts to £10,458 6s 7d. A cheque for £10,500 was sent to the Prime Minister by the treasurer of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council on behalf of the Southland fighter plane fund committee yesterday. This is to purchase a second plane for the R.A.F. Money for the first plane has already been sent and acknowledged by the Air Ministry. It is the wish of the donors that if possible the plane be named "Southland II" and flown by a New Zealand airman. Hamilton's list was closed with the total at £2868 and the New Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co. suppliers have given more than £6000. Christchurch's total to date is just over £1000. The Hawkes Bay collection is approaching the £4000 mark. Taranaki Total Mounting. Taranaki's total, with many amounts yet to pass through official channels, is £1822 3s lOd and the known amounts yet to be acknowledged exceed £400. District totals yesterday were:— New Plymouth £1307 18s 4d, Hawera £384 17s, Waitara £95 16s, Eltham £26 10s, Patea £7 2s 6d. The New Plymouth figure includes £41 Is from the Stratford district. The Mayor of Stratford, Mr. P. Thomson, and the chairman of the Stratford County Council, Mr. J. C. Best, have been asked by the Stratford patriotic committee to open lists. Additional New Plymouth acknowledgments are: —
