NAZI BOMBING THREAT OPEN WAR ON CIVILIANS
ALLEGEDLY AS REPRISAL
Rec. 5.5 p.m. Berlin, Sept. 9. The German Press, threatenmg more intense bombing, declares that London's West End may be attacked if British raids continue over Germany. The Hamburger Fremdenblatt says:— "The greater part of the English capital, particularly homes and amusement places and those circles from whom sprang those who are guilty for this war, have hitherto been intentionally spared. However, after the recent Royal Air Force attacks on German civilians it is c'oncluded that the Luftwaffe's lessons have not been taken to heart. "British raids are described as "another act of piracy and a brutal act of terrorism against civilians." A German communique stated : — "Bomber formations in spite of bad weather conditions continued reprlsals against London. They 'were able to recognise their targets from a great distance by fires still burning. Bombs of all calibres were dropp'ed on both sides of the Thames, on docks, harbour works, oil depots, gas and electricity works and warehouses. Photographs from the air confirm the effectiveness of the previous attacks. We attacked several aerodromes in the neighbourhood of Lincoln. Raid on Hamburg. "British planes attacked residential quarters of Hamburg and damaged several houses. Some civilians weie in-
jurgd. The enemy lost a total of 22 planes. Four of ours are missing. "Bombs damaged a merchantman oi 8000 tons in the Firth of Forth." The German news agency claims tnat a bomber considerably damaged installations at Woolwich, destroying a powder magazine, industrial plants and a railway station. Thirty-five of Germany s biggest bombers departed for London shortly before midnight carrying bombs of the heaviest calibre, according to authorised quarters' at Berlin. Airmen reported that the London fire had spread and the smoke was so thick tliat bombers had difficulty in seeing their targets.
