ON ACTIVE SERVICE
DEATH OF SAPPER IANS SECOND ECHELON UNIT RELATIYES IN TARANAKI Advice has been received at New Plymouth of the death on active service in England of Sapper Oswald J. Jans, a member of the forestry detachment of the second echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Sapper Jans, who was aged 47 years, was unmarried. He was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. O. Jans, formerly well known residents of the Stratford and Oakura districts. Sapper Jans also lived for some time at Oakura and Okato, but for the past 10 years had lived in the King Country, where he was engaged in contracting. Sapper Jans saw three years' service in the last war. He enlisted from Taumarunui. Two brothers, Messrs. J. and C. Jans, and one sister, Mrs. G. L. Grey, live at Oakura. Of the other brothers Mr. Frank Jans lives at Stratford and Mr. Tom Jans at Wellington. A fifth brother, Private Leo Jans, is a member of the railway detachment with the third echelon. Other sisters are Mesdames W. J. Robson (Opunake), E. Davies (Hawera), P, Coe (Stratford) and F. Newbold (Wanganui).
